The Emperor’s Own

I love children’s books and I love it when a Heavenly TRUTH pops right out of one of those books.  Recently, I was reading a book called The Emperor’s Egg to my five year old little guy. He probably wondered why I was re-reading the pages again and again and why I was SO intrigued by a story about a penguin.  And you’re probably wondering too, so let me just share a few very interesting and amazing things with you about the largest penguin in the world…the Emperor Penguin {and I promise I will attempt to draw a few good spiritual truths out of this!}

The story begins with the FATHER penguin caring for his egg…while the mom waddles off to the ocean in search of some yummy food (a mama off to the ocean and food … I’m getting some serious spiritual implications here, just kidding:).  Anyhow, the father is lovingly and sacrificially caring for this new life for TWO WHOLE MONTHS, while being stuck on freezing cold ice.  And when I say stuck, I mean stuck…daddy penguin doesn’t even eat for TWO WHOLE MONTHS!!  The MOST IMPORTANT thing for this father penguin to remember is to keep the egg from getting cold…off the ice, and out of the wind…from dying.  IN ANTARCTICA, mind you!  Wow!!  What a responsibility for this daddy!  But, God, in His amazing wisdom, made the Emperor Penguin to have plenty of thick, cushiony feathers and lots of stored-up belly fat so all he has to do is tuck that egg right under his tummy, rest it safely on his feet, and wait.

So, what’s that got to do with ME and YOU?

Our story begins with the FATHER too.  He has CARED for us, from before the beginning of time.  “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being formed in secret and intricately and curiously wrought in the depths of the earth.  Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days of my life were written, before ever they took shape, when as yet there were none of them.” (Ps. 139:15-16, Amplified)

Our Father paid the ultimate sacrifice in caring for US…He sent His own Son to earth for 33 years, to endure much more than freezing cold ice and a lack of food.  He endured 40 days and nights of unrelenting temptation and trial from the worst enemy while in the wilderness, rejection by His own beloved friends, the mockings and beatings and humilitation of  “religious” leaders (aka: me and you) though He could have called 10,000 angels, and the pain and depth of sorrow of being hopelessly separated from the ONE who had sent him.

Yet, THE MOST IMPORTANT thing for our Father was and is to keep His children “off the ice and out of the wind” … from dying. Sometimes, we too are in our own kind of Antarcticas.  Life is just plain hard.  Lonely.  Cold.   Hungry.

About 1 in 7 people worldwide – 854 million – do not have enough food to sustain them.  And, it is estimated that a child dies every 5 seconds from hunger-related causes.

You are a hiding place for me; You, Lord, preserve me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” (Ps.32:7)

We know THE EMPEROR! He is our HOPE. We are His very OWN, tucked right under His very strong bosom.

Alone, none of us can solve the world’s hunger problem or provide a home for every fatherless child.  Alone, none of us can survive the coldest of days or blackest of nights.  Even the Emperor Penguin knows that…when it gets reeaally cold, all the daddy penguins huddle together and slowly shuffle over the hard, unforgiving, frigid ice…until they get to a particularly slippery slope.  Then, they do something, well, fun and creative…the belly slide!! Yet, they ALWAYS REMEMBER to take care of their egg!

So, we, the CHURCH, are called to huddle together and slowly shuffle through the harsh realities of life – yours, mine, and those of the poor, the orphan, the widow, and the sojourner.  And sometimes, we may just have to think out of the box for a while…I’m thinking the belly slide could be lots of fun, if we just remember to take care of each other on the way!

Please don’t misunderstand me.  I am certainly not trying to minimize the holiness or GREATNESS of God by comparing Him to a penguin.  What I am trying to do is to see this life from HIS perspective, from what HE has made in creation.  I believe the Father intends for us to find Him in every detail this side of Heaven.  His unceasing glory deserves nothing less.   We are THE EMPEROR’S OWN.

Thank you Jesus for turning a simple bedtime story with my little guy into a grand lifetime story for me.  I hope you like it too:)

In my Father’s care,

Jodie
